Breaking Free from Depression: Understanding, Coping, and Seeking Help
So often there is not a single, specific reason why one becomes depressed. Most times the reasons are many, leading to and overlapping others. When you consider the innumerable situations that can cause a person to fall into depression such as a failed relationship, flunking a major exam, a financial crisis or the loss of a loved one, it’s...depressing.
When depressed all you seek is a person to talk to who can understand and make sense of your eerie thoughts and unrelated feelings, someone who will grab you in their arms where you feel safe to cry loudly and fearlessly, but this is unlikely to happen. There is also the risk of unloading on one who is incapable of handling your burden due to their problems consuming them, or lack emotional maturity and compassion and so turn your depression into something to make fun of.
Then you start isolating yourself and allow your brain to die from negativity since you found no help. You try watching motivational videos alone in your room but you’re unable to focus. You don’t let your family know you’re in crisis, so all that’s left are tears. Weeping yourself into exhaustion, you may begin to see suicide as your only escape.
Following are some practical ways to aid in overcoming depression:
Meditation can play a vital role in reducing negative thoughts and feelings.
If you regularly pray, don’t allow your depression to interfere with your daily practice. And don’t hesitate to ask your family members, friends and members of your religious community for their prayers on your behalf.
Sleeplessness and reduced appetite are the classic companions of depression. Try short rest periods and snack lightly on healthy, natural foods several times each day.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated.
If your depression lingers or worsens, see a doctor of psychiatry immediately. He or she can determine if medication and/or therapy is necessary.
If you are depressed, remember that you don’t have to suffer alone. Reach out if you need to. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone needs help at times during their life. Help is available.
